“1551:
English and Welsh alehouses are licensed for the first time. The German method of ‘hopping’ beer was introduced during the reign of the late Henry VIII, who died early in 1547, but many have criticized the use of hops, saying that beer is a ‘naturall drynke for a Dutche man but on no account for an Englyshe man.’ Laws have been passed fining brewers who put hops in their ale.”
